Whoever come are the right people.
Here the 104 speakers that spoke at THE GREAT CHANGE REX webinars, when the COVID started on March, to contribute to help the fitness industry to win the COVID challenge.
How will it work? The REX UNconference has 3 phases:
Phase 1: sign up for a ticket, propose your topics or a presentation.
Register and propose your preferred 2 topics you'd like to listen to. Any topic is open for discussion, it can be something you are passionate about and want to stimulate debate upon, something you wish to know more about and motivate group contribution. Content is decided by you, so don’t be shy. If you’d like to give a 30 minues presentation (just talk and/or slide share), just propose a title and short description.
Phase 2: vote for your 3 favorite topics
The day before the event we are going to send you all topics and presentations proposed. You’ll get to vote for your favorites. The day before we’ll organize the results into an agenda with sessions lasting 30 minutes. Be ready to hold your presentation if it will be voted by the participants. The REX UNconference will have from 4 to 8 rooms to meet others, just like we normally do during our REX gatherings.
Topics proposed so far:
- Making the old and elderly fitness concept school join the new (proposed by Fares George Choufani)
- Are gyms ready to meet the demands of the new exerciser post Covid? (proposed by James Shillaker)

Phase 3: let’s start

The REX UNconference method
We only have 4 Guiding Principles, 1 Law and 3 participants roles.
The four Guiding Principles
1- Whoever comes is the right people. It reminds us that it is not how many people come, or even who comes (in the sens of status or position) that counts, rather it is the quality of the interaction and conversation that make the difference.
2- Whatever happens is the only thing that could have. It reminds us that once something has happened, it’s done—and no amount of fretting, complaining or otherwise rehashing can change that. Move on. The real learning and real progress will only take place when we all move beyond our original agendas and convention-bound expectations.
3- Whenever it starts is the right time. This principle drives all Western executives crazy, but that doesn't make it any less true. It reminds us that “spirit and imagination do not run on the clock.” They appear (or not) in their own time, which by definition means it is the right time.
4- When it’s over, it’s over (within this session). It reminds us that we never know how long it will take to resolve an issue, once raised, but that whenever the issue or work or conversation is finished, move on to the next thing. Don’t keep rehashing just because there’s 15 minutes left in the session. Do the work, not the time.
The One Law: the Law of 1-click.
We only have one rule: if, during our time together, you find yourself in any situation where you are neither learning nor contributing, go to some more productive room by clicking the link with your mouse.
Three Participation Roles
There are three different roles that can be chosen by anyone willing to participate in an REX UNconference:
1- Birds: they are the proponent of a topic within the macro subject of the event, who will lead his room work, remaining in the room at all times.
2- Butterflies: they are the people who got interested in a particular theme proposed by someone else, and joins him to work on it; the butterflies won’t leave the table until the end of the work, unless anyone is following the “Law of 1-click”.
3- Bumblebees: they are those people who take the freedom of the One Law very seriously and use their mobility, constantly fitting from room to room. It is the person who is not willing to be fixed on a single topic and would rather visit many different groups, collaborating in a more punctual way; They have a very important role in the dynamics, because they represent the space of freedom of the process and perform the task of cross-fertilization, helping rooms to overcome creative blocks, inspiring them with fresh views or sharing solutions they already saw in another rooms. It is not uncommon to see a bee become a butterfly, if the person gets very caught up by a particular theme.
A final admonition: BE PREPARED TO BE SURPRISED
Many organizations and lots of people spend considerable time trying to ensure that they will not be surprised. When this effort succeeds, a degree of comfort is doubtless expereinced, but at a price. Things get pretty dull, and creativity is difficult to find. A REX UNconference is not about being dull; innovation is the coin of the community. Surprise, therefore, is the essence of the REX UNconference.
While this experience may be painfull, it is not without benefit, for when our expectiations depart, new ideas may emerge. So do yourself a favor, trash that expectations right now. Or at very least get ready to. Be Prepared to Be Surprised.
